Ontario | What Comes Into Season for August?

August is always about balance for me. On one end of the scale I’m trying to soak up every last bit of summer, and on the other I’m starting to get ready for the cozy fall season that’s just around the corner. One way I soak up every last bit of summer? Enjoying the abundance of fruits and vegetables that are in season here in Ontario!

This month we are spoiled with the selection of locally-grown fruits and vegetables, and stopping by my local farms and farmer’s markets to grab things has been bringing me a lot of joy.

Here are the last handful of things that come into season in Ontario for August:

Fruits

  • Cranberries
  • Grapes
  • Muskmelon
  • Nectarines
  • Pears

Vegetables

  • Artichokes
  • Bitter melon/Fuzzy squash
  • Eggplant
  • Leeks
  • Parsnips
  • Winter squash

With August, we see the return of certain produce like pears, leeks, parsnips and winter squash, which all take a break for the spring and start of summer.

And then once September rolls around, we see the last of the produce that comes into season for the year here in Ontario. This includes brussel sprouts, red onions, pumpkins and apples (though apples are technically available all year round, we have many more varieties of apples come into season here when September rolls around).

You can check out the complete list of everything currently in season in Ontario here. I hope you’re able to enjoy all these locally-grown, colourful foods while they’re in season! Happy eating!
